In May 2018 I bought a one way ticket from Toronto, Canada to Sydney, Australia. After arriving down under I took some time to map out my mid-long term goals. I asked myself where social media fit in and I really didn’t have a great answer.
At different chapters of my life I can now look back and see that I was totally addicted to social. I was consumed with crafting the perfect social image to build my business. Constantly checking my phone from first thing in the morning to late at night, editing videos, curating content that I felt motivated to make more of the more “likes” and comments that came in. A daily obligation.
When I caught myself making small decisions based on their visual appeal - ‘oh, this dress will look so pretty on boomerang … this trip will look so cool on my feed’, I wondered if on a larger scale these small seemingly meaningless choices were actually adding up to having huge impact on my life in a meaningful way.
And moving to Bondi Beach - perhaps the unofficial global epicentre of social influencers, I got a behind the scenes look at the brand power behind what it takes to make an account go viral. The ugly truth behind social is that most of the models look absolutely nothing like their post production filtered, facetuned images that I’d been comparing myself to.
I have now gone social free for 2018. No Facebook. No Instagram.
I am not too far into this self experiment but already I’m blown away at my increased productivity, how much more connected I feel to my real - not “reel” friends near and far and the amount of time I have back. My brain feels like it was stuck inside and now it is finally outside and breathing again.
